Pleural effusions from 105 patients with malignant and nonmalignant diseases were examined for tumor cells, content of CEA, beta2 microglobulin, ceruloplasmin, alpha2 macroglobulin, orosomucoid, lysozyme, and hexosaminidase. Only CEA and beta2 microglobulin determinations were of diagnostic value. CEA concentrations greater than 11 ng/ml were found only in malignant effusions. Beta 2 microglobulin values were increased in pleural effusions due to lymphoma or immune diseases. Measurement of CEA and beta2 microglobulin in addition to the cytologic examination could increase the diagnostic significance of the analysis of pleural effusions.

Squirrel monkeys were inoculated by the intratracheal inoculation of 700 Klebsiella pneumoniae organisms and developed lobar pneumonia in about 24 h. Characteristic clinical findings were fever, anorexia, and coughing. Laboratory findings included leukocytosis or leukopenia (with the latter more prominent in ultimately fatal infections), bacteremia, and shedding of bacteria into the pharynx. Infected monkeys showed increased plasma lysozyme activity as well as increased plasma ceruloplasmin, haptoglobin and alpha1-antitrypsin. The mortality rate was 60%, and the mean time of death was 50.5 h. Pathologically, the disease spread by means of Kohn's pores and other pathways that generally did not involve airways as a means of dissemination until about 30 h. Squirrel monkeys seem to be better models for human respiratory K. pneumoniae infection than rats or mice.

The study was carried out in 89 men aged 21 to 57 years with a history of exposure to mercury vapour from 2 to 26 years during occupational work involving chlorine production by the method of mercury electrolysis. The workers were divided into three groups depending on the duration of occupational exposure: 1) 32 workers with a short history of exposure 2-10 years, 2) 37 workers with medium-long exposure - 11-20 years, and 3) 20 workers with a history of long exposure - 21-26 years. The urinary concentrations of mercury in these individuals was 73 +/- 60 microliters x 1(-1), and in blood this concentration was not exceeding 50 microliters x 1(-1). The control group comprised 40 men aged 17 to 52 years. They had not had any occupational exposure to chemicals, or harmful physical factors. On the basis of clinical, haematological and biochemical studies 89 workers with occupational exposure to mercury vapour were regarded as clinically healthy. None of them had any symptoms and signs of the complete neurasthenic syndrome or organic brain injury. Increased nervous excitability was the complaint of 24 workers, 9 had headaches, sleep disturbances were reported by 5, and a feeling of tiredness and apathy was mentioned by 5 men. EEG recording demonstrated 81 normal tracings, and moderately pathological records in 8 men. The parameters of immunity and proteins acute phase reaction were determined, measuring the concentration of immunoglobulins, lysozyme, C3c, C4, alpha 1-acid glycoprotein, haptoglobin and ceruloplasmin in serum. A lower level of IgA, IgG and lysozyme was only noted in individuals with occupational exposure exceeding 20 years.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Cells isolated from the pronephros of carp were incubated in vitro with the organophosphorus insecticide trichlorfon or dichlorvos, each of which is used in aquaculture to eliminate fish ectoparasites. Dose-dependent suppressive effects were observed in assays for lymphocyte proliferation and myeloid cell respiratory burst activities. Dichlorvos given by bath in vivo did not affect antibody production against Yersinia ruckeri even if the spleen and kidney were obviously contaminated according to acetylcholinesterase activity analysis. Some blood parameters of nonspecific immunity (ceruloplasmin, lysozyme, hemagglutinins) were slightly affected.

The indices of immunity and acute phase reaction in 89 men exposed for 2 to 26 years to mercury vapours were assessed on the basis of immunoglobins, lysozyme, C3c, C4, alpha 1-acid glycoproteins, haptoglobin and ceruloplasmin concentrations in blood serum. Urinary mercury concentration amounted to 73 +/- 60 micrograms x l-1 whereas in blood it did not exceed 50 micrograms x l-1. A decrease in concentration of IgA, IgG and lysozyme in persons who worked for over 20 years was found. The observed phenomenon did not affect the anti-infection and antitumor immunity of the workers.

Immunological studies were carried out in 85 male smokers smoking 15-25 cigarettes daily for 2-25 years, and in 49 non-smokers. Cigarette smoking for a period longer than 10 years caused a fall of IgA, IgG, IgM and lysozyme concentrations. On the other hand, the levels of C3c and C4 components of complement, alpha 1-acid glycoprotein, ceruloplasmin, haptoglobin and antistreptolysin O were normal. Impairment of immunity to infections and neoplasms in cigarette smokers may be related to deficiency of various proteins responsible for normal course of immune processes of the organism.

The effect of a variety of proteins and amino acids was investigated on oxygen free radical activity as assessed by copper/hydrogen peroxide induced benzoate hydroxylation as well as copper-catalysed ascorbate autoxidation. Serum albumins from a variety of species (human, bovine and dog) had both inhibitory and stimulatory effects depending on the molar copper to protein ratio; low ratios were inhibitory and high stimulatory. Some other proteins tested (lysozyme, soybean trypsin inhibitor and conalbumin) also had dual (inhibitory and stimulatory) effects, as did both histidine and polyhistidine, but all effects occurred at different molar ratios presumably dependent on the relative affinities for the copper ions. In contrast, metallothionein and caeruloplasmin, proteins specialised to bind copper in vivo had no stimulatory effects. In this paper we show that in addition to their fairly well documented inhibitory effects, under certain conditions some proteins also stimulate radical reactions. The possible role of this phenomenon in vivo is discussed.

The effect of trichlorphon, one of the most widely used organophosphorus insecticides, on the nonspecific immune response in carp (Cyprinus carpio) was studied. The effect of 20,000 ppm trichlorphon on the immune response was followed for 3 and 56 days after intoxication. The effect of 10,000 ppm trichlorphon on the nonspecific immune response of carp experimentally infected by Pseudomonas alcaligenes and Aeromonas punctata was also examined. Leucocyte number, phagocytic ability of neutrophils, percentage NBT-positive PMN cells, phagocytic index, lysozyme level in serum, and ceruloplasmin activity in plasma were examined on Days 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 14, 18, 22, and 26 after carp were exposed. After intoxication leukopenia was observed as decreases in phagocytic ability of neutrophils and in phagocytic index. Lysozyme level in serum was also decreased compared to that of control. The percentage of NBT-positive PMN cells decreased when the ceruloplasmin activity in plasma increased in intoxicated fish.

In autumn and spring a group of 132 ten-year-old school children (54.5% from families of smokers) were examined for blood content of immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, (gM, in autumn including also IgE), lysozyme (LYS) and the so called acute reactants (alpha-1-antitrypsin = A1AT; alpha-2-macroglobulin = A2M; transferrin = TRF; ceruloplasmin = CPL); and for saliva sIgA and sLYS. Autumn examination detected significantly higher mean values of IgE in children from families of smokers, while other mean differences remained insignificant. Spring examination revealed significant differences in the means of IgA levels children from families of smokers (FS) had significantly lower levels of IgA while their saliva sIgA values were significantly higher. Mean spring CPL levels in FS were significantly higher. Analysis of distribution curves of autumn examination showed a significant shift of A1AT towards higher values in boys from FS. Girls from FS exhibited a shift of LYS towards lower values. Spring examination in boys FS evidenced a shift of CPL and sIgA values towards higher values; the curve of serum IgA levels split distinctly into two subgroups. In girls from FS the only change observed during the spring examination was a shift of A2M levels towards higher values with an indication of a split. To conclude, passive smoking in school children is responsible for a number of significant changes, the latter being more frequent and marked in spring when the children's organism is weakened by many other unfavourable circumstances. More significant changes were seen in boys.

Variations in some humoral immune responses to polluted air were studied in two semicohorts of children, initial age 10 years, from two urban communities differing from each other by the degree of ambient air pollution. The material for analysis (blood, saliva) was collected every autumn and spring in 3 successive years, giving a total of 6 sets of specimens for each examinee. All blood specimens were examined for the serum level of immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM), lysozyme (LYS), total serum protein (TP) and the level of the acute reactants alpha 2 macroglobulin (A2M), alpha 1 antitrypsin (A1AT), transferrin (TRF) and ceruloplasmin (CPL). The saliva specimens were examined for the level of lysozyme (sLYS) and secretory IgA (sIgA). The mean protein concentrations for each of the 6 sampling series were correlated with the mean of 24-h emission concentrations measured in the last 3 months preceding the autumn or spring sampling series. In the community area characterized by a low-degree non-industrial pollution of air the correlations of immunoglobulins to SO2 and floating particles (FP) in air were as a rule inversed while the response from TP, LYS and acute reactants was direct. In the community contaminated by industrial pollutants, correlations between proteins and SO2 were markedly weaker, but there was a significant positive correlation between H2S and levels of IgA and A2M in blood and sIgA and sLYS in the saliva. A high degree of positive correlation was also observed between H2S and levels of IgM and LYS. Inverse correlations were only between levels of LYS and FP, SO2 and H2S. Significant correlations were also between contaminant concentrations and FP. The associations found between the contaminant concentrations in air and levels of blood and saliva proteins supports the hypothesis that quality of air may have considerable impacts on defense mechanisms. Seasonal variations in the quality of air may increase the rates of childhood morbidity for acute upper respiratory tract infections.
