The acute phase response involves changes in serum concentrations of a number of liver-synthesized proteins. Among these are C-reactive protein (CRP), ferritin (FER), transferrin (Trf) and ceruloplasmin (Cp). Determination of serum CRP, FER, Trf, and Cp was performed in 52 patients with inoperable head and neck cancer (n=11), inoperable esophageal cancer (n=10), rectal cancer (n=9; operation was performed=5, inoperable=4), and lung cancer (n=22), all of whom were treated with radical radiotherapy (RT). Post-radiotherapy CRP levels were significantly higher compared to the preradiotherapy levels (p<0.001). We found decreased serum Trf levels during the irradiation period, while acute-phase proteins such as CRP, FER, and Cp levels increased during the RT period. Further studies on the roles of other acute phase reactants and the above mentioned parameters in a large-patients-with cancer group during radiotherapy are required to understand the role of markers, which are altered during radiotherapy.

Hypothesis: Nowadays, rectal cancer is an important healthcare challenge that affects many thousands of people each year worldwide, being diagnosed especially after the age of 50 years. Objective: This study attempted to evaluate the oxidative stress in patients with rectal cancer. Methods and results: 30 patients from the "Prof. Dr. Al. Trestioreanu" Institute of Oncology in Bucharest were treated with neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy during 2014 and 2016 and were included in the clinical study. Blood samples were obtained in dynamics during the treatment. From the blood samples, the serum was separated and used to identify the biochemical oxidative stress parameters. Results: Regarding the determination of lipid peroxides, albumin thiols, the cuprum oxidase activity of ceruloplasmin, the values registered in the dynamic of the treatment highlighted their increase to a maximum at the treatment's endpoint due to an important oxidative stress. Regarding the serum values for total antioxidants, the results pointed out the activation of the natural protection systems, which in time were overwhelmed, due to the installed oxidative stress. Conclusion: Part of the cytotoxic effect of radiotherapy was due to the production of oxidative stress. The cell was constantly exposed to the cytotoxic action of the reactive oxygen species. The obtained results indicated the dual relation to which the tumoral cell exposed itself and the installed oxidative stress, respectively, the oxidative stress being a cause or a consequence of the malign transformation. A role of pro- and antioxidants for reducing rectal cancer (RC) incidence in operative, preoperative, and postoperative treatments is still disputable and controversial. The redox state of venous blood and tissues of blood vessels of 60 patients with RC (T2-4N0-2M0G2) and 20 donors is studied by means of the conventional and spin-trapping electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The intensity of the signals from ceruloplasmin (CP), transferrin (TF), and labile iron pool (LIP) at temperature T = 77 K as well as superoxide generation rate and nitric oxide (NO) levels at T = 300 K is measured. The reduced CP and TF activity and decreased NO levels increased LIP levels and superoxide-generating rates are detected in blood species. Correlation analysis for the five-year survival rate as a function of the extracted values is done. The results show that the intensities of the corresponding EPR signals from the "native" and "trapped" paramagnetic centers can be potentially used for the understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the RC progression and treatment.
