The effects of the selective delta peptide, DPDPE ([2-D-penicillamine,5-D-penicillamine]enkephalin), on morphine-induced EEG and EEG power spectra were assessed. Adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with cortical EEG electrodes and permanent indwelling ICV and IV cannulae. Rats were pretreated with ICV sterile water or ICV DPDPE at 1.25, 2.5, or 5.0 nmol, 10 min before receiving IV morphine at 3 mg/kg. The treatments produced high voltage EEG bursts and associated behavioral stupor. The EEG data were further analyzed on a Pathfinder II computer and statistical analysis of EEG spectral parameters was performed by using a one-way ANOVA followed by Turkey's HSD. ICV DPDPE at 2.5 nmol and 5.0 nmol significantly increased EEG absolute global spectral power. Furthermore, ICV DPDPE at 2.5 and 5.0 nmol significantly increased the duration of morphine-induced high voltage EEG bursts. These data further indicate an in vivo interaction between mu and delta opioid receptors.

In previous limited investigations of the human femur/stature ratio we (Feldesman and Lundy: Journal of Human Evolution 17:583-596, 1988; Feldesman et al.: American Journal of Physical Anthropology 79:219-220, 1989) have shown it to be remarkably stable across ethnic and gender boundaries. In this study we evaluate the femur/stature ratio in 51 different "populations" of contemporary humans (n = 13,149) sampled from all over the world. We find that the mean ratio of femur length to stature in these populations is 26.74%, with a very restricted range of variation. When we compare mean femur/stature ratios of males and females, there are no statistically significant differences. ANOVA performed on a naive grouping of samples into "whites," "blacks," and "Asians" indicates that there are significant racial differences (P less than 0.001). When we subject these groups to Tukey's HSD procedure (a post-hoc test), we find that "blacks" are responsible for the significant ANOVA, being significantly (P less than 0.005) different from the other ethnic groups. "Whites" and "Asians" are not significantly different (P = 0.067) under the conditions of this analysis, although all these racial comparisons may be suspect given the small sample sizes. We tested the efficacy of the ratio in three situations: predicting stature of repatriated white Vietnam veterans; predicting stature in a random sample of South African blacks (of known stature), and predicting the stature of a single Akka pygmy. In the first and third cases, the femur/stature ratio does better than the traditionally recommended regression equation, while in the second case the predictions from the femur/stature ratio are less accurate than from the appropriate regression equation. These results encouraged us to apply this ratio to mid- and late-Pleistocene fossil hominids, where the choice of reference population for stature estimates continues to trouble workers. We estimated stature for a sizeable number of Homo erectus (HE), early Neanderthal (EN), Near Eastern Neanderthal (NEN), and early anatomically modern Homo sapiens (EAMHS) by using the simple relationship: stature (cm) = femur length (cm) * 100/26.74. Our results show that HE fossils are slightly taller on average than either EN or NEN samples, which do not differ significantly in stature, while EAMHS fossils are significantly taller than all three earlier groups. While these results are not surprising, our stature estimates for these fossils differ from currently published estimates based on sample-specific regression-based formulae.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Tempering of glass produces a state of compressive stress in surface regions which can enhance the resistance to crack initiation and growth. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of tempering on the sizes of surface cracks induced within the tempered surfaces of opaque porcelain-body porcelain discs, with contraction coefficient differences (alpha O-alpha B) of +3.2, +0.7, 0.0, -0.9, and -1.5 ppm/degrees C. We fired the discs to the maturing temperature (982 degrees C) of body porcelain and then subjected them to three cooling procedures: slow cooling in a furnace (SC), fast cooling in air (FC), and tempering (T) by blasting the body porcelain surface with compressed air for 90 s. We used body porcelain discs as the thermally compatible (delta alpha = 0) control specimens. We measured the diameters of cracks induced by a microhardness indenter at an applied load of 4.9 N at 80 points along diametral lines within the surface of body porcelain. The mean values of the crack diameters varied from 75.9 microns (delta alpha = -1.5 ppm/degrees C) to 103.3 microns (delta alpha = +3.2 ppm/degrees C). The results of ANOVA indicate that significant differences in crack dimensions were controlled by cooling rate, contraction mismatch, and their combined effect (p less than 0.0001). Multiple contrast analysis (Tukey's HSD Test) revealed significantly lower (p less than 0.05) crack sizes for tempered specimens compared with those of fast-cooled and slow-cooled specimens.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Sixty subjects between the ages of 21 and 48 months were placed into groups based on mean length of utterance (MLU) and chronological age (CA) to test Stampe's hypothesis about the development of phonological processes. The subjects were given the Phonological Process Analysis (Weiner, 1979), and a proportion score for each of sixteen phonological processes was derived for each subject. The use of the various phonological processes across MLU groups and age groups was analyzed by multiple regression correlation, three-way ANOVA, and Tukey's HSD tests. MLU was found to be the best classification for the subjects for describing the phonological processes. The results and discussions present MLU-referenced guidelines regarding the emergence, duration, elimination, and universality of the sixteen phonological processes.

This study investigated the utility of the Point Subtraction Aggression Paradigm (PSAP), a computerized laboratory analog aggression measure. We measured the effects of methylphenidate (MPH) on aggressive responding in children with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), who had high ratings on the Child Behavior Checklist Aggression Factor (CBCL; Achenbach 1991). Results are reported for 6 subjects, ages 8-11 years. All were tested at baseline in an unmedicated condition, and after double-blind administration of placebo, 0.3 mg/kg of MPH, and 0.6 mg/kg of MPH. A main effect of decreased aggressive responding with MPH was found, with a dose-related change by repeated measures ANOVA (F = 6.59, df = 2.10, p = .014). Post-hoc analysis with the Tukey HSD indicated that only the 0.6 mg/kg was significantly (p < .05) different than placebo. Implications for use of the PSAP in future investigations of medications in aggressive children are discussed.

Two hundred amalgam (Dispersalloy) cylinders, 3 mm high x 4 mm wide, were tested to determine the compressive and diametral tensile strength of amalgam treated with 1 and 3 mixed drops of Amalgambond resin and 1:1 and 3:3 drops of resin powder paste of Panavia Ex resin. Twenty samples of each group, including a control group, were tested with a 1 cm diameter testing rod in an Instron universal testing machine at 0.5 mm/minute speed. All samples tested for compressive strength were not statistically different from one another (ANOVA). ANOVA and Tukey HSD test indicated no significant difference in diametral tension between the Amalgam and Amalgambond 1X materials, but significant differences were demonstrated with the Amalgambond 3X and Panavia 1X and 3X materials.

This study examined the validity of rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and heart rate (HR) obtained during incremental exercise (INC) as indicators of intensity during constant load exercise (CL). Nine cyclists (VO2max = 53.3 +/- 8.9 ml.kg-1.min-1) performed INC to determine intensity at the onset of blood lactate accumulation (OBLA). Three CL work bouts at OBLA were performed in an environmental chamber with temperatures (30 degrees C, 22 degrees C, 14 degrees C) randomly assigned. RPE and HR were determined every 5 min. Data during CL from initial 5 min (5 MIN), second 5 min (10 MIN), midpoint (MID), and exhaustion (END) were used in treatment by time ANOVA to examine differences between temperature conditions, with repeated measures ANOVA testing for differences between INC and CL. Tukey HSD post-hoc tests identified mean differences, with significance set at P < or = 0.01. No significant differences across temperature conditions for RPE or HR were found. RPE obtained at OBLA during INC (13.7 +/- 0.9) was significantly different from 5 MIN, 10 MIN, MID, and END during CL in all temperatures. HR obtained at OBLA during INC (165.4 +/- 12.3 bpm) was significantly higher than 5 MIN for all temperatures (30 degrees C = 153.0 +/- 9.9; 22 degrees C = 151.0 +/- 11.8; 14 degrees C = 150.2 +/- 13.8), but was not significantly different from INC for 10 MIN, MID, or END measures. The data indicate HR is a more valid marker of exercise intensity than RPE.

Free radical-induced injury to the arterial wall has been implicated in the pathogenesis and progression of atherosclerosis. To model the in vitro effects of free radicals on endothelial cell function, protein and lipid synthesis were measured after exposing cells to a superoxide generating system of xanthine (X = 100 microM) and xanthine oxidase (XO = 0.2 units). Total protein synthesis, measured by [35S]methionine uptake, decreased by 87.65 +/- 2.04% over 4 hr compared to controls (P < 0.05). Examination of lipid synthesis by high-performance liquid chromatography in cells prelabeled with either [3H]oleic acid or [3H]sodium acetate revealed alterations in all lipid classes. Phospholipid and neutral glyceride synthesis significantly decreased in a time- and dose-dependent fashion compared to controls (two-way ANOVA). In contrast, cholesterol synthesis and lipid peroxidation increased in a time- and dose-dependent fashion. When X = 200 microM and XO = 0.3 units, there was a statistically significant increase in cholesterol synthesis and lipid peroxidation within 24 hr (Tukey's HSD). We conclude that there is evidence of endothelial cell injury as measured by decreases in protein, glyceride, and phospholipid synthesis. The concurrent increases in lipid peroxidation and cholesterol synthesis may explain the relationship between free radical injury and the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.

Although surface finish can be a critical variable in clinical performance, there is a dearth of information regarding surface characteristics of teeth prepared for artificial crowns. This study characterized teeth prepared for complete cast restorations using three representative types of rotary instruments. One hundred and five standardized tooth preparations for complete crowns were performed using a modified milling machine on extracted human teeth with diamond, tungsten carbide, and tungsten carbide finishing burs of similar shape (n = 35). The prepared dentin was analyzed with a surface profilometer and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Differences between rotary instrument groups were determined with parametric ANOVA and Tukey's Studentized Range (HSD). Statistically significant differences in the surface topography of prepared teeth were open. Mean surface roughnesses (Ra) were 8.6 and 6.8 mum for teeth prepared with diamond and tungsten carbide burs. Teeth completed with finishing burs appeared to result in a smoother surface (1.2 mum).

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis whether endurance athletes have distinct expressions of functionally relevant surface antigens of monocytes. Under standardized experimental and laboratory conditions CD 14+ blood monocytes of 55 males (22 sedentary controls [CO], individual anaerobic threshold [IAT]: 2.2 +/- 1.2 W.kg-1, VO2 max: 47 +/- 12 ml.min-1.kg-1; 13 endurance athletes, training: 3-10 hours weekly [E1], IAT: 3.0 +/- 1.1 W.kg-1, VO2max 57 +/- 5 ml.min-1.kg-1; 20 endurance athletes training: > 10 hours weekly [E2], IAT: 3.7 +/- 1.3 W.kg-1, VO2max: 64 +/- 6 ml.min-1.kg-1) were investigated for relative surface receptor expression of CD45, CD64 and HLA-DR (direct immunofluorescence, flow cytometry). E1 and E2 showed significantly (ANOVA, Tukey's HSD test; each p < 0.01) higher relative receptor expressions for CD64 in comparison to CO (E1: +62/E2: +71%; percentage of increase compared to CO value), CD45 (+44/+32%) and HLA-DR (+22/+35%). Cell counts of four monocyte subpopulations (CD56+, CD14bright+CD16-, CD14bright+CD16dim+, CD14dim(+)-CD16bright+) did not show significant differences between the groups. These data suggest that in endurance athletes during regenerative training period circulating monocytes show an enhancement of functionally relevant surface receptors indicating an activation monocytes.
