1. Haematology, red cell metabolism and blood chemistry of five fledgeling black-faced cormorants Leucocarbo fuscescens were studied and the results were compared with previously reported data on several other sea-birds. 2. The mean erythrocyte count of the cormorant is similar to that of penguins but lower than that of flying, non-diving sea-birds. The cormorant's red cell mean cell volume (MCV) is lower than that of penguins but higher than that of non-diving sea-birds. 3. Leucocyte numbers are within expected limits for avian species. 4. Isoenzyme analysis using isoelectrofocusing in polyacrylamide gels was used to distinguish Hammondia hammondi and Toxoplasma gondii sporozoites. Five enzyme systems were studied: aconitase (EC 4.2.1.3), aspartate aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.1),
glucose phosphate isomerase

lactate dehydrogenase

EC 1.1.1.27
), and phosphoglucomutase (EC 2.7.5.1). Three stocks of T. gondii belonging to 3 zymodemes were compared to 1 stock of H. hammondi. Hammondia hammondi differed from T. gondii at all 5 loci analyzed. This was observed for all 3 zymodemes of T. gondii. These results indicated clear genetic differences between the 2 species.

Three T. vaginalis isolates from Egypt were compared for their isoenzyme electrophoretic patterns on cellulose acetate. The enzymes studied were: glucose-6-dehydrogenase (G6PD); malate dehydrogenase (MDH); phosphoglucomutase (PGM);
glucose phosphate isomerase

); malic enzyme (ME); hexokinase (HK) and
lactate dehydrogenase

LDH
). The three isolates shared the same isoenzyme banding patterns of MDH;
GPI
; HK and
LDH
. Two of these isolates were similar in their banding patterns of G6PD, PGM and different from those of the third isolate. The latter was similar to one of the two isolates and different from the other in the ME isoenzyme patterns.

A comparative study was made of the effects of beta-sitosterol, estradiol-17 beta and progesterone, individually and in combinations, on certain biochemical parameters important to carbohydrate metabolism in the uteri of adult ovariectomised rats. beta-Sitosterol (SITO), estradiol (E2) and combined treatment (SITO + E2) induced significant increases in glycogen concentration and the activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH),

). Progesterone (P) administration however, raised only the uterine

The 11.5-kDa Zn(2+)-binding protein (ZnBP) was covalently linked to Sepharose. Affinity chromatography with a cytosolic subfraction from liver resulted in purification of a predominant 38-kDa protein. In comparable experiments with brain cytosol a 39-kDa protein was enriched. The ZnBP-protein interactions were zinc-specific. Both proteins were identified as fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase. Experiments with crude cytosol showed zinc-specific interaction of additional enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism. From liver cytosol greater than 90% of the following enzymes were specifically retained: aldolase, phosphofructokinase-1, hexokinase/glucokinase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, and fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase.

The activities of 6 enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism were estimated in superficial transitional cell carcinomas from 103 patients undergoing transurethral resection of the bladder for the first time. The patients were followed by quarterly endoscopic examinations for a maximum of 81 months (median 33 months). During followup 24 patients had progressive disease. The activities of phosphofructokinase and
phosphohexose isomerase
were significantly lower in tumors from patients whose disease had superficially invaded the lamina propria (stage pT1) than in others in whom it was confined to the bladder mucosa (stage pTa). Similarly the activities of the 2 enzymes were significantly higher in well differentiated (grade 1) than in moderately well differentiated (grade 2) carcinomas. Univariate analyses using the log rank test showed that neither pathological stage nor malignancy grade of the carcinoma was a significant factor in predicting the risk of progression. Of the 6 enzymes, below median activities of phosphofructokinase,
lactate dehydrogenase
and
phosphohexose isomerase
were associated with a significantly increased risk of progression in these patients. Multivariate analyses using Cox's proportional hazards model showed that the activity of
lactic dehydrogenase
in superficial transitional cell carcinoma is an independent prognostic factor in predicting the risk of progression. It is postulated that the measurements of the activities of the 3 enzymes in tumors from patients with superficial transitional cell carcinoma might help to select individual patients with a high risk of progression for adjuvant intravesical treatments.

Eleven enzymes were measured in individual fibers of soleus and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles from two flight and two control (synchronous) animals. There were five enzymes of glycogenolytic metabolism: phosphorylase,
glucose-6-phosphate isomerase
, glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, pyruvate kinase, and
lactate dehydrogenase
(group GLY); five of oxidative metabolism: citrate synthase, malate dehydrogenase, beta-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase, 3-ketoacid CoA-transferase, and mitochondrial thiolase (group OX); and hexokinase, subserving both groups. Fiber size (dry weight per unit length) was reduced about 35% in both muscles. On a dry weight basis, hexokinase levels were increased 100% or more in flight fibers from both soleus and TA. Group OX enzymes increased 56-193% in TA without significant change in soleus. Group GLY enzymes increased an average of 28% in soleus fibers but underwent, if anything, a modest decrease (20%) in TA fibers. These changes in composition of TA fibers were those anticipated for a conversion of about half of the originally predominant fast glycolytic fibers into fast oxidative glycolytic fibers. Calculation on the basis of fiber length, rather than dry weight, gave an estimate of absolute enzyme changes: hexokinase was still calculated to have increased in both soleus and TA fibers, but only by 50 and 25%, respectively. Three of the OX enzymes were, on this basis, unchanged in TA fibers, but 3-ketoacid CoA-transferase and thiolase had still nearly doubled, whereas TA GLY enzymes had fallen about 40%. In soleus fibers, absolute levels of OX enzymes had decreased an average of 25% and GLY enzymes were marginally decreased.

Some biochemical parameters of liver and liver microsomes were studied in albino rats following administration of cobra and viper venoms at dose of 2 mg/kg body weight. The total protein content in cobra venom treated (CVT) animals and DNA and RNA contents of liver and liver microsomes were almost unaltered in both the venom treated animals while total protein content was significantly reduced in viper venom treated (VVT) animals. Alkaline and acid phosphatases activities of whole liver showed significant increase in both the venom treated animals whereas the rise in cholinesterase activity in CVT animals was not significant. Lactic acid content was significantly higher in CVT animals compared to either VVT animals or controls. The glycolytic enzymes viz., aldolase,
