Studied were the synchronizing effect, the course of treatment, the combination of the gestagens CAP and MGA with PMS as well as their effect on the conception rate in heifers. A total of 143 heifers of the Bulgarian Brown breed (89 test and 59 control), aged 17--18 months, weighing 350--360 kg on an average, were used in the experiment, divided into three test and three control groups. I test group. Twenty-five animals were given daily one tablet of Synchrorosyn-Peach, the tablet containing 10 mg active chloromadinoacetate. The course of treatment lasted 15 days. II test group. Thirty-six animals were treated daily with 5 g of the premix preparation MGA-100 in the course of 20 days, the heifers being divided into two subgroups of 18 animals each. Each heifer of the first subgroup was injected with 2500 IU PMS. III test group. Twenty-eight animals were given MGA-100 at the same rate as in the II test group, but in the course of 14 days. Half of the test heifers were injected with 2500 IU PMS each on the day when the treatment with MGA-100 was discontinued. It was found that the oral administration of Synchrosyn-P for fifteen days and MGA-100 for 20 days results in a synchronized estrus in 84, resp. 44 per cent of the heifers, with a total conception rate of 76 and 94 per cent, respectively. The combined use of MGA-100 and PMS (2500 IU) enhanced the synchronizing effect. The shorter period of feeding with MGA-100 (14) days lowered both the synchronizing effect and the total conception rate, regardless of its combining with 2500 IU of PMS.

We use a Perkin Elmer MGA 1100 mass spectrometer modified for blood gas tension measurements to study transcutaneous measurements of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and helium in normal subjects. We use an aluminum sampling chamber heated to 42--44 degree C and connected to the mass spectrometer by about 2 m of stainless steel tubing. The sampling area of 5 cm2 is covered with a polytrifluorochloroethylene membrane 18 micrometer thick (Allied Chemical Co., Aclar 33c). The membrane is supported by sintered stainless steel disc with a thermistor incorporated for measurement of "membrane" temperature. The chamber is heated with a printed circuit heater (Minco) and is temperature regulated by a servo circuit. We have used the system to measure, O2, CO2 N2 and He via the heated skin in four normal subjects, breathing air and then 100% oxygen. We also observed the response to a single breath of helium. Helium appears at the skin within 10--15 sec. The time constant of its disappearance is about 70 sec. The average uncorrected gas tensions which we obtained breathing air were 11.2 kPa for oxygen, 5.1 kPa for carbon dioxide and 67.1 kPa for nitrogen. The corresponding values breathing oxygen were 41.1 kPa for oxygen, 4.4 kPa for carbon dioxide and 13.1 kPa for nitrogen.

Qualitative and quantitative changes of tertiary follicles were studied in ovaries of heifers during and after the treatment with melengestrol acetate (MGA--6-methyl-6-dehydro-16-methylen-17alpha-acetoxyprogesteron), the atretic tertiary follicles being classified into several types. During the administration of MGA an increased number of atretic follicles was found as well as a stimulation of glandular cells of theca interna, while after the withdrawal of the drug an increased number of normal tertiary follicles was observed estrous cycle. On the 7th day of MGA administration most of the atretic follicles were in the stage of early atresia and a few only were in the stage of luteinized cystic atresia. On the 14th day, however, most of tertiary follicles were in late atresia and only a few were in early atresia. Moreover, at the same time the number of follicles classified as luteinized cystic atresia was increased, while that of follicles showing cystic follicular atresia was decreased. After the withdrawal of MGA the most numerous group of follicles was in the stage of early atresia. It was demonstrated that the time changes in the number of follicles with a diameter larger than 5 mm resemble that of normal tertiary follicles. During MGA administration the number of follicles with a diameter of 2 to 5 mm was the largest. These findings show that MGA may effect the feed-back regulation of both the cyclic and basal secretion of gonadotropic hormones. After the withdrawal of the drug there may be higher basal secretion of gonadotropins.

A review of studies on the microleakage retention, durability, and cariostatic efficacy of BIS-MGA resin fissure sealants suggests that newly-erupted permanent molars benefit least but the benefit for premolars is consistently high. Problems arising in the assessment of the sealants in clinical trials are discussed.

An electron microscopic study was conducted on human sperm over an incubation period of 5 to 6 hours in Tyrode's solution at room temperature. Examination of aliquots of the cells, fixed at timed intervals, with glutaraldehyde, malachite green, and postosmication revealed that malachite green affinity material (MGA-M) was barely discernible at first but did accumulate considerably upon standing. Biochemical analysis of MGA-M, which is extractable by glutaraldehyde, revealed that MGA-M is a mixture of extractable phospholipids and of their lyso-derivatives. Some of these substances have fusogenic properties; i.e., they are able to fuse together the membranes of two different cells. The appearance and accumulation of these fusogens occurred during the incubation period of 5 to 6 hours, which was previously shown to be required to capacitate human sperm in vitro. It is probable, therefore, that human sperm, during their initial period of incubation either in vivo or in vitro, not only become capacitated and undergo the acrosome reaction but also develop the fusogenic substance(s) which are necessary for the imminent fusion of their plasma membrane to the vitelline membrane of the mature oocyte.

The measurement of anaesthetic gas mixtures with a mass spectrometer is complicated by the overlap of fragmentation products of the anaesthetics with the normal respiratory gas. For the MGA 200 quadrupole instrument the problem has been overcome by incorporating simple circuitry which, for an appropriate mass number, sums the concentrations of the unwanted fragments and subtracts them from the total output for the particular channel; this provides an accurate and stable system (within +/- 1% f.s.d.) over at least 24 h.

One hundred thirteen soft-tissue tumors were studied by immunofluorescence using anti-smooth-muscle (SMA) and anti-skeletal-muscle antibodies (MGA). Of the classic leiomyomas examined, 94% manifested bright fluorescence with SMA, whereas cellular leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas failed to stain. Of the rhabdomyosarcomas studied, 21% showed fluorescent cross-striations or fluorescent granules after incubation with MGA. None of 48 control tumors fluoresced with either antibody. No tumor vessel seen showed smooth-muscle fluorescence in its walls. Although of little diagnostic value, immunofluorescence utilizing specific human antibodies is a valuable tool with which to study some of the antigenic components of these neoplasms.

The salient features are described of the psychomotor treatment given to two sisters: SA aged 11 yrs 5 months and MGA aged 9 yrs 9 months both affected with aspecific congenital myopathy and under medical treatment since they were 3 months old. These two cases were selected as examples for the following reasons: (1) they may offer the opportunity to highlight what should be the focal objective of all treatment of myopathic children whatever the syndrome involved, namely to ensure that the children retain capacities required for normal social life as long as possible and to help them retain the essential physical capabilities required for everyday life; (2) because the slower course of this type of myopathy permits the gradual implementation of a diversified treatment protocol in the various social contexts (family, school, play groups) in which these patients are able to lead a life whose limitations are scarcely visible for a long time. Experience in the treatment of these two cases confirms that the role of Psychomotor Education in the treatment of myopathy cases is essentially that of teaching the child to be aware of and responsible for its own movements as the disease progresses, while showing it how touse all its available sensomotorial instruments to counteract its muscular inadequacies which progressively damage the child's body image. Psychomotor education also provides the child with the self-assurance it needs in order to retain its autonomy within the framework of a knowledgeable and motivated family.

Our working hypothesis was that the low concentrations of progesterone (P4) and synthetic progestins administered in hormonal regimens to control estrous cycles of cows would have similar effects on secretion of LH and 17 beta-estradiol (E2). In addition, we hypothesized that concentrations of exogenous P4 typical of the midluteal phase of the estrous cycle and the corpus luteum (CL) would have similar effects on LH and E2, and the effects would be different from those of synthetic progestins and low concentrations of P4. Cows (n = 29) were randomly assigned to one of five treatment groups: 1) one Progesterone Releasing Intravaginal Device (1PRID; n = 6); 2) two PRIDs (2PRID; n = 6); 3) norgestomet, as in Syncro-Mate-B regimen (SMB; n = 6); 4) melengestrol acetate (MGA; 0.5 mg/day; n = 5); and 5) control (CONT; n = 6). Treatments were administered for 9 days (Day 0 = initiation of treatment). All cows from 1PRID, 2PRID, SMB, and MGA groups were injected with prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) on Days 2 and 5 of the treatment period to regress CL. Cows in the 1PRID and SMB groups were also administered exogenous estrogen according to the respective estrous synchronization protocol for these products. Daily blood samples were collected from Day 0 to 35 to determine concentrations of P4. On Day 8, blood samples were collected at 15-min intervals for 24 h to determine pattern of LH secretion. On Day 9, all treatments ceased and cows in the CONT group received injections of PGF2 alpha.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

One hundred (100) left arms were examined for median-to-ulnar or ulnar-to-median nerve anastomoses using surface electrodes. Muscles innervated by the anastomosis were determined using a concentric needle electrode. We found a motor median-to-ulnar nerve anastomosis in the forearm in 32% of the cases (Martin-Gruber anastomosis, MGA). No case of motor ulnar-to-median nerve anastomosis in the forearm could be found. The MGA mainly innervated muscles, which are normally supplied by the ulnar nerve. The high incidence of MGA in this study shows that all clinically relevant motor median-to-ulnar nerve communications in the forearm can be detected using surface electrodes in routine examinations. Stimulus spread must be looked for and eliminated by the methods described.
