Introduction

Tsujii laboratory aimed at building a computer system that understands human language (natural language).

This research field in computer science is called natural language processing (NLP) and the technologies developed in this area are used in a variety of applications including machine translation, search engines, and question answering. The rapid growth of textual information makes such technologies more relevant to a wide range of people.

We developed generic theories/technologies for natural language processing with the following specific goals.

Processing of real-world text by extending theories and technologies developed in computer science and linguistics.

Using machine learning techniques and grammar theories, we explored methodologies of natural language processing such as syntactic analysis, information extraction, and text mining.
